Super Bowl 55 approaches, and it’s another one without the Detroit Lions. No one is surprised by this, of course. The Lions are just one of four franchises to never appear in a Super Bowl.

1. The Lions are among the NFL teams with the longest odds to win Super Bowl 56. A majority of MI sportsbooks are listing the Lions at +8000 to win the championship next season. Only William Hill has the Lions with greater odds at +10000.
2. Detroit and the Rams were already on opposite ends of the Super Bowl LVI odds table at DraftKings Sportsbook, with the Lions +7500 (third highest) and the Rams +2000 on Jan. The Lions, who will receive QB Jared Goff in the trade, are now tied with the Houston Texans for having the highest odds to win it all next year at +10000 at DK.

And while their Super Bowl odds improved from 18-1 to 13-1, the Rams' odds at making the playoffs rose from 58.8% to 67%. The Rams' odds at winning the NFC West is now 36.7%, a 6.1% increase.

Though things seem to be in rebuilding mode for the 2021 season, can a miracle happen? Do the Detroit Lions have a chance to appear in Super Bowl 56?

The 2021 Super Bowl featuring the Tampa Bay Buccaneers and the Kansas City Chiefs is a week away. But some Michigan online sportsbooks have lined up odds for the 2022 Super Bowl. And oddsmakers aren’t feeling very confident in the new-look Lions to shock the world in 2022.

Lions starting over with new management, coach

If you bet on the Lions, keep in mind that the team is in restart mode. In fact, it’s already been a busy offseason for the Detroit Lions just about a month into the process.

During the season, Matt Patricia and Bob Quinn were fired as coach and general manager, respectively. On Jan. 14, the Lions hiredBrad Holmes to be the new general manager. Holmes was the Los Angeles Rams college scouting director prior to joining the Lions.

The organization also brought in former linebacker Chris Spielman to help in the front office. He joined owner Sheila Ford Hamp, president Rod Wood, and Holmes in hiring Dan Campbell as the new head coach.

Campbell, a former Lions player, and former Assistant Head Coach of the New Orleans Saints had a memorable opening press conference.

Despite his unproven coaching record and verbose personality, Campbell put together quite a coaching staff.

Who will replace QB Matthew Stafford?

Despite all the changes to the coaching staff, the biggest news of the offseason could be the end of the Matthew Stafford-era in Detroit.

Last week it was reported that Stafford and the Lions agreed to part ways, and the two will be ending their relationship after 12 seasons together.

Stafford is the franchise leader in nearly every major career passing category. He has thrown for 45,109 yards and 282 touchdowns over his career. Stafford also led the Lions to three playoff appearances, but never recorded a playoff win or division championship.

A trade of Stafford likely lands the Lions some important NFL Draft stock for 2021. It could also force Detroit into selecting a quarterback with their No. 7 pick.

Along with the Stafford news and the new coaching staff, the Lions have other questions. Kenny Golladay and Marvin Jones Jr. are both free agents this offseason, leaving Detroit without any proven receivers currently part of the 2021-22 roster.

On paper, it certainly seems like the Lions have an uphill fight in 2021. Despite that, the risk of betting on Detroit is very low. The reward could be very high.

Just a $1 wager on the Lions to win would provide a payout of $81. A $100 wager would lead to $8,100. In other words, a small bet could go a long way… if you believe the Lions will roar to the top of the NFL standings.

The law of averages says the Detroit Lions will someday win the Super Bowl, right?

The Detroit Lions are a pretty sad franchise. I’m not trying to tear them down, but they’ll enter 2020 without a Super Bowl under their belt.

Nay, this team has never even been to a Super Bowl.

It’s unfortunate, seeing as the Lions have rostered legendary talents like Calvin Johnson and Barry Sanders in their history. They also have done very little with former #1 overall pick Matthew Stafford leading the charge.

I’m not sure it’s all on Stafford, of course, especially when you saw how little the team did once he succumbed to a broken back in 2019.

Stafford was actually playing fantastic ball before getting hurt last year, while Detroit was the victim of collapse and bad luck for huge chunks of the year. Going back, you can note that the Lions lost eight of their games by one score.

With underrated competitiveness, some nice moves, and a healthy Stafford running the show, could Detroit shock everyone with a crazy turnaround and a title run?

He’s also a defensive mastermind, so there’s still a chance he jumpstarts a Lions defense that couldn’t get any pressure on opposing quarterbacks in 2019.

Should the culture get a positive shock and Detroit’s pass rush get better, the Lions could be as gritty as ever. The rest would fall on Stafford, who at some point just needs to be elite and lead this team to glory.

The former Georgia star is totally capable of that. He also finally has a deep cast of weapons to get the job done. D’Andre Swift joins Kerryon Johnson to form a pretty loaded rushing attack, while Kenny Golladay, T.J. Hockenson, Marvin Jones, and Danny Amendola piece together an incredibly underrated passing attack.

On paper, the Lions aren’t bad at all. The rest is on them to take this roster from “hey, they’re not so bad” to “hey, they’re crazy overlooked.”

Well, they’re the Lions. Detroit has literally never even reached the Super Bowl, and the NFC is quite loaded.

Maneuvering their way through the NFC playoffs, let alone the NFC North, and then also finding a way to win the dang thing — it feels like a lot.

Matthew Stafford is way better than anyone gives him credit for, but he’s still generated just four winning seasons as Detroit’s lead passer. He’s also quarterbacked three playoff teams and is 0-3 in said situations.

As noted before, it doesn’t all hang on Stafford, but you do have to wonder if he can get out of his own way at some point.

He also has historically not gotten a ton of help, and a major concern is that will continue this year. Detroit has talent on the ground, but their running game ranked 21^st last year, and their pass rush was 29^th.

Your offense needs to be good to win games, but running the football and generating pressure are “how to win at football 101.” If the Lions can’t start doing these base things, they won’t get anywhere.

I actually like a lot about the Lions. And no, I’m not joking. I want to vouch for them as an amazing value bet or a fun sleeper. I just can’t, is the thing.

The first issue is they’re in a tougher-than-expected division in the NFC North, while the NFC as a whole looks loaded. Detroit would do well for themselves just to sniff the playoffs, but going from 3-12-1 to being a legit title contender is just asking a lot.

The Lions are better than people think they are. Their running game should be improved. I’m not sure their pass rush can get much worse. A healthy Matthew Stafford really gives them a shot at bouncing back, too.

But bouncing back and being competitive is one thing. Winning a Super Bowl is another thing entirely.
